PONOS Battle Cats
Petition Against Dragon
Subverting an age-old Chinese tradition to promote a modern day mobile game.
Since the 5th century B.C, there have been 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, used to mark and celebrate each Chinese New Year. But since the beloved cat isn’t one of the twelve, the most popular cat themed mobile game took it personally. As people in Korea and Taiwan ushered in the Year of the Dragon in 2024, we subverted age-old tradition to promote our game. The Battle Cats presents Petition Against Dragon - a fully integrated campaign to get Koreans and Taiwanese to recognise 2024 as the Year of the Cat. And with more petition signatures garnered, we released more in-game drops. The absurdity of it all came to a head as we issued challenges to pro-gamers born in the Year of the Dragon to complete the game Live on Twitch and YouTube. Failing to do so, they would have to “betray” their own kind and join the cause.
